New Year, New Beginnings, New Life

The beginning is the first part or section of something, or the place where it starts. "In the beginning," says the beginning of the Bible, "God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)

January, the beginning of a new year is a good time of year to make some lifestyle changes. If we want, we can set a goal for the new year, something we want to accomplish. This is called a New Year’s resolution.

Discussion questions:

  1. Did I accomplish everything I wanted to last year?
  2. What could I have done differently or better last year?
  3. Is there something I want to work towards for the year 2020?
  4. What are some reasons you think people make New Year resolutions?
  5. Why do people break their resolutions?
  6. Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution (or similar goal)?
  7. Did you achieve the goal?
  8. If so, talk about what you did to succeed.
  9. If you didn’t meet your goals, can you tell what were some things that hindered your progress?

It can be difficult to walk through the doorway of a new season in life. Some tips to keep the goals we have set for ourselves:

  • Set realistic goals that can be measured.
  • Enlist others for support
  • Never give up
  • Overcome obstacles
  • Go forward one step at a time
